Artist’s Statement

Trained as a scientist and developing as an artist I have become particularly interested in investigating the influence of art and science on our way of understanding and experiencing the world.  Views of reality and the resulting ethical effects on the political and cultural landscapes are at the center of my artistic exploration.  Stylistically, I am interested in the expressive portrayal of forms, which introduce a sense of movement, change and psychological intensity.  My objective is to communicate an idea that is gestured toward rather than over-determined in order to allow the viewer space to engage, speculate, react, and consider.  Ultimately, the intention is to involve the observer in a dialog that challenges established perceptions and categories of knowing.
Drawing on classical techniques as well as canonical artistic and literary subjects, I attempt to induce resonances between the traditional western aesthetic and currently pertinent ethical issues.  In the course of this pursuit I have discovered that the initial process of my underpainting results in the most dynamic, expressive and ‘connected’ image. One of the central goals in my painting technique and thus my artistic expression is to have this initial pass be integrated and not lost in the subsequent development of the painting. The traditional technique of multiple glazing (essentially transparent color films) allows the previous layers and their respective character to show through and still contribute to the appearance and feel of the final painting.  Final glazes are executed rapidly over texturized underpainting with the idea that energetic brushstrokes should be evident throughout the work.  With this approach I would hope to communicate an essence of passion to the composition.  In the end, my goal is to develop visual texts and artistic techniques that successfully engage with the important debates of out times.

Currently displayed at The Leigh Gallery, Chicago

Article authored by Alexandra Donner

...Allegory and historical context aside, "Robin Egg Blue" is above all an extremely beautiful and unusually memorable painting. Long after viewing it, one remains captivated by its elusive message and intricate play of color on reflective surfaces. The pairing of familiar and wildly natural objects creates a dichotimy that captures the viewer‘s imagination; the piece sends a drastically different message to everyone that sees it... read more

East Lansing painter makes magic with science and art

Written by Mary C. Cusack

The lines between art and science are often blurred, but never so skillfully blended as in the work of East Lansing painter Robert Moses. His ambiguously titled exhibit “Social And Cultural Expressionism” hangs at the East Lansing Public Art Gallery...more
